Pajama Day!

After many weeks, we were super proud to fill up our compliment bucket. Students worked hard to earn compliments for good behavior, kind manners, and trying their best on their work. To celebrate, students enjoyed a pajama day at school. On this day we also said goodbye to our student teacher. Ms. Haders came to us from Georgetown College and became part of our kindergarten family. We wish her luck!

Zambo Visits

Kindergarten student enjoyed a visit from Officer Greathouse and Zambo, a K9 police dog with the Lexington Police Department. Office Greathouse shared with us about how he trained Zambo to search for people and drugs. When Zambo performed his duties as a police dog he would often get a special treat - a hamburger from the drive-thru! It was a real treat for our students to get to learn about police dogs from a real police officer. Thank you Officer Greathouse!

Family Night 2011

Last week we were thrilled to host our first Kindergarten Family Night. Students were invited to Western with their siblings and parents to participate in various reading and math activities. Students created a turkey craft while parents gathered with classroom teachers to learn a variety of ways to work with students on reading and math skills. Parents walked away with new ideas and even a few door prizes! =)

Mrs. Harris' kindergarten students helped brainstorm ways to make Baby Layne's monster costume just right for Halloween.

Storybook Characters

Kindergarten students in Mrs. Harris' class dressed up as their favorite storybook characters. Students practiced listening and speaking as they shared their favorite characters in books they brought from home.

Fire Safety Week

We were super excited to learn about fire safety a few weeks ago. Members of the Georgetown Fire Department came to talk with our class about ways to prevent fires and what to do if we have one. We loved getting our very own fireman hat, coloring books, and pencils. The best part of all was getting to walk through the fire truck! Thanks Georgetown Firemen!

Welcome to a New School Year!

We look forward to a great school year with our new group of kindergarten students at Western Elementary School. We're already in the swing of our new routine and the children are doing very well! Our students are busy practicing their letters, numbers, and names. We have learned about centers and even started reading groups this week.

Be sure to check back often for updates and pictures!
